An unnamed ticket man worked at a train station in a French village during World War I. He was old and tired of the war, and hoped for it to end soon. When Rupert Davenport visited his village, trying to get to the front lines, the ticket man turned him away, since all trains had been taken for the war effort, and suggested he return home to England.
