California is a state in the United States. It is the most populous state in the country, and is one of the most culturally and economically influential regions in the world. The state contains several important cities, such as Los Angeles and San Francisco.
California is home to two major Cahill strongholds: a Janus stronghold underneath the Hollywood sign in Los Angeles, where the Clue Iodine is hidden, and a Tomas stronghold at Alcatraz Island off the coast of San Francisco, which hides the Clue Wormwood. In addition, the Tomas have also set up strongholds at Olympic sites in California, in Los Angeles in 1932 and 1984, and in the ski resort of Squaw Valley, near California's border with Nevada, in 1960. It is unknown if the Tomas are still active in these cities.
Lucian agent Aleksander Spasky spent several years secluded in a Zen retreat in California before being recruited by Nathaniel Hartford. Madrigal agent Fiske Cahill was kidnapped by the Vespers in Napa Valley, as part of the Vespers' plan to use hostages to force the Cahills to help them build the Machina Fini Mundi.
